Task 1
Since very early times people have been telling stories, even before people could communicate verbally! Very early time saw cavemen creating drawings on the faces of rocks with images of creatures such as wooly mammoths and the like. Storytelling has been an integral part of our human culture over generations and generations of development as a species. There are many myths and legends still being told to this day. Stories began to blossom more when people were able to converse and tell someone aurally. When people tell stories they make it have an effect that cannot be found so much when reading, the voice of the storyteller adds more to the story and also gives it more meaning.
People used to tell stories of mythical beings such as dragons and zombies coming to life or having some presence in the world. Many common myths are Theseus and the Minotaur, and “The Snow Maiden.”
Myths, legends and lores play a key part in film too, with many films being based off of things like zombies and ghosts.
Since the Middle Ages upon till films, theatre was the big method in telling a legend, myth or lore story. People used to attend these abundantly and they had an impact on societies around the world as they progressed.
Stories nowadays see themselves told through forms such as film adaptations and TV. More and more stories are being told, myths, legends, lores about topics and other areas more around recent times. New stories are being told about things such as ghosts (which have been going quite a while) and UFOs and as a result many films and TV shows have been made based on these ideas. Some examples of this would be War of the Worlds 2005 by Steven Spielberg and Most Haunted presented by Evette Fielding.
Despite their being films and theatre productions to tell you a story, you can very much still find new and old stories being told aurally by word of mouth. Take for instance an elder telling his grandchild about a supposed ghost that haunts the local church. Stories will very much go on being told aurally just as much as they are increasingly becoming told visually.
In video games there are many different genres and subgenres and they are all different in a number of ways. Most common types of video games, or games made most popular over recent years are games known as FPS games or First Person Shooters. First person shooters put the player in the body of the character they play as, they will most definitely involve guns as it is the reason it is known as a shooter. FPS games can see crossovers with other genres such as action and adventure which we are now seeing with next-gen Grand Theft Auto Five.
The beginnings of video games were classics such as Super Mario and Sonic The Hedgehog, iconic side-scrollers with the element of platformer games included. These took sales by storm. These game classics didn’t have that good of a storyline, pretty much all of them were very basic with a simple plot that keeps on repeating itself throughout the game. Sidescrollers are literally played from a side on view as if your looking side on to the game, they usually go from left to right with the occasional backwards level.
Modern times have the seen the advent of different genres of games. The 21st century has mainly been a time for games of the first person style. FPS games have become the most predominant of all the genres as lots of people are interested in its style and pace. Games such as Halo and Call of duty really brought this genre to life. Nowadays there are a wide range of first person games such as mirrors edge, Skyrim and Mount and Blade.
First person games aren’t just about running around with guns all of the time, now some First Person games are set in medieval times (Skyrim, Mount and Blade) with weapons such as swords and Crossbows being used.
First person games have changed over the years and in turn have become more story based. You can see this with games such as Halo and Call of Duty. For a while now, First Person Games have become the epitome of gaming with it being the most popular overall.
TPS or Third-Person-Shooter stands for all the games that are played from the third person (looking from behind the controllable character) point of view.
On an overall scale it doesn’t quite beat FPS games on a popularity basis.
Third person games are becoming increasingly popular as the years go by, with Rockstar’s Grand theft auto V breaking record sales on its original release. The stories In theird person games are different as they allow different things to happen. Grand theft auto allows the playability of three different characters at pretty much any time. Quite a few Third Person games are becoming open world style as it works really well with the genre.
Racing games are all games, which involve racing in some form or another. Many racing games are focused around cars and other motorized vehicles. Racing games don’t really have a story in the same sense as other genres such as GTA or COD however its more about YOU. Many racing games such as Forza or Gran Turismo leave YOU as the character in the ‘story’ and they mainly focus on you becoming the best driver in the world. Racing games aren’t seen to have a proper story too them at all, its all about progression.
Some racing games are combined with open world aspects that you might find in the likes of Grand Theft Auto, some examples of this style would be Driver – San Fransisco and Forza Horizon.

Fighting games are very simple and involve, as the name of the genre states, fighting. While there may be some small story it focuses on the fighting of characters only. The fighting usually consists in an arena type (however not all the places are arenas) area. These fighting are mostly known through games such as the Mortal Kombat series and Street Fighter. All of these fighting games make you take control of a character as you engage in over-the-top close quarter combat. These types of games are more typically found in arcades as they are not exactly story based and are very simple and fun to play. The reason they do so well in arcades is because of the simplicity and over exaggerated style and pace they have. They perform very well when played with two players and thus helps them. As seen above, fighting games are, like platformers, played from a side view perspective.
Adventure games get the players to explore the game, taking them on an in game journey. Adventure games mainly have stories and games such as Tomb Raider and Red Dead Redemption. These game allow you to explore many different locations and sometimes allow you to interact with the game world.
These have proven to be quite popular among gamers over recent years with Rockstar’s Release of Grand Theft Auto 5 selling like crazy.
There are other Adventure games where there isn’t really a story at all other than the one you make by playing it. Games that fall into this category would games such as Project Zomboid, Minecraft and Starmade. These games are completely left to you as you can do whatever you want whenever you feel like it. For example, in Minecraft you start in a completely random generated world and are left to do as you please, there is nothing that says “build a house here” or “talk to the village elder” what you do and when you do it is completely up to you. Quite a few adventure games are endorsing sandbox features and buyers are reacting well to it.
Simulation games are made to simulate real life experiences or activities virtually. While they don’t appeal to everyone, they are still quite good and can also provide some valuable knowledge or experience to people. Take for instance the Driving simulator games where they simulate driving cars and buses ect. These accurately give a realistic experience replicating real life elements. Some people have actually taught themselves to drive and even fly aircrafts, but this isn’t very common. They are mainly played for recreational reasons.

Puzzle games, are simply puzzles but turned into a video game. Some puzzle games do have stories, however most do not. A great example of a puzzle game without a real story would Bejeweled 2 by Pop Cap games. Bejeweled 2 gets the player to rearrange on screen gems into certain patterns in order to progress further. Bejeweled 2 like many other puzzle games harbor numerous game modes such as speedrun, Time trial and some others to name a few.
You will however find some games from completely different genres which incorporate puzzle aspects into their storylines or multiplayer game modes. The game Amnesia – The dark descent was notorious for its puzzle aspects to the story, making player constantly work to try and progress further into the story. Again Grand Theft Auto 5 fits too because of its use of puzzles in the story and in multiplayer, the puzzles emulate what supposed ‘hacking’ is like, making players hack open security doors ect by completing word puzzles or connecting electrical circuits.
Puzzle games are constantly becoming integrated in other genres rather than being their own genre now, and soon their won’t be a standalone puzzle genre, but moreover “adventure-puzzle” or “Puzzle horror”.
Rpg or Role Playing Game, are games where players take the role of a character and complete task within a narrative. RPG games put players in a fictional world making them undertake quests and adventures. Some RPG Games allow you to make your own character; one such game would be Skyrim from the Elder scrolls series. Skyrim took gamers by storm with an amazing fictional landscape bigger than ever before. Games like skyrim allow people to become fictional characters such as a Cat-Wizard-man. RPG games can allow you to things the same as in real life such as getting married and getting a job. Stories and dialogue within RPG games are usually very in depth and often take a very long time to write and script.

Turn based strategy games play like board games in the sense that everyone gets a turn and you can only do things when its your turn. They haven’t really been the most popular of the game genres, but that doesn’t mean they are bad. One of the most pioneering games in the area would be Sid Meiers Civilization franchise. Civilization puts you in the driver’s seat of the civilization you choose.
Turn based strategy games aren’t really story based, while they have a back-story, you are usually left to your own devices and made to do as you please. When playing Turn Based Strategy games, you will have to really think about what you are going to do next. Games in this field can be really challenging.
Real Time Strategy games are almost the same as Turn based strategy games, however there are no turns. The reason they are called realtime strategy games is because they don’t stop and start, everything flows throughout and the game is constant. With Real time strategy games you really have to think on your toes, as you wont have time to really stop and think. Both Real time and Turn based games have great multiplayer support and are played really well between one or more people, the only downside is that they take some time to get into and require enough time to actually play.

Many Game locations are based on real life places, you can see many references to real life places in games. Grand Theft Auto is one of the most famous for this. All of the Grand Theft Auto games since the first 2 are set in a fictional reincarnation of US cities such as Los Angeles/Hollywood and New York. Some games are based in rural places such as mountainous landscapes games using places like this would be Skyrim and Mount & Blade. Some games are based solely on ideas and are made completely from scratch.
When making the game world for your game you have to take into consideration the conditions of the game worlds environment. Will the game world be bright and colourful? Will it look abandoned? Will weather affect the overall look of the world? The beauty of including a weather system into your game is that the in game world can change with the different weather like with snow ect…

In order to come up with a story for a video, you must do what you do in any other story building exercise. You must make a storyboard of ideas so you can work out what ideas you have and which ideas are better than others.
This is how most companies go about the thought process for their story ideas.
This is how most companies go about the thought process for their story ideas.
All games undergo a storyboarding exercise, much like films and TV. They complete this process in order to work out what goes where throughout the game. This makes the creation process easier.
All games have visual artists who come up with the visuals and character designs. These people will do a rough sketch of what characters might look like so that the game developers can give an opinion on the designs and can then suggest changes to the designs making them meet their ideas.
When making a game you will be faced with the task of coming up with a working title (name) for the game. This will give a rough idea on how to make the game and will usually be based in the story the game is based on. You may notice that in some games the working title has changed during production and has ended up being produced and sold as a different name.
Video Games always have emotions in them. They add to the story and give the player a different feel to the game. This is brought to life by all kinds of things like the way the character sounds, the facial expressions shown on the characters faces, the backing music or ambient sound effects, they all add to the games overall feel.
The characterization is the process of making the characters to go in the game. The characterization process is all about choosing what personality a character has, what views the character has, is the character good? Or is the character evil? You can come up with a whole in depth profile of each character in your game, possibly writing a back story for them if needs be (this will only really apply to main characters).
Video Games typically have stereotypes, which they keep coming back to. You can see this throughout many games. Main stereotypes in video games are mainly to do with gender and race, and can sometimes get game producers into trouble as controversy can arise.
The real stereotype involving gender would be that involving female characters. You can in many games that female characters are overly sexualized often making appearances with large breasts and a slim body. Many female characters are shown as athletic in some way or another regardless of their character.
Male characters that are main characters, quite often are shown as strong and resilient with a straight sexuality. A lot of male characters have blonde hair and blue eyes, whereas female characters are mostly seen with brown hair and brown eyes.
You won't often find a main character that is weak or gay/lesbian as this would be seen as 'unusual' in video games because of societies views on these topics nowadays. Many different races are shown with different stereotypes, most common of the stereotypes would be your typical white hero, who is seen as the good guy.
Emotional themes are a key part in the playability and story of a video game. Emotions are what drive the characters to do the things they do in the video games and they also have a great effect the player playing the game. Without emotions the game would be stale and boring as there would be no real point or feel to the game. You will mainly see emotions more predominantly in cut scenes, which appear throughout video games. Quite wide ranges of emotions are portrayed throughout video games, however this really does vary with the genre the game is situated in. For instance a horror game won’t show happiness, moreover it will show fear and terror, with characters looking and feeling scared. And vice versa with another Genre.

Heroism is quite a common theme seen in video games, especially FPS games. When playing FPS games with a story you will often get parts when the main character is against all the odds to complete a task. It is in the moments that the heroism theme comes to life.
The characterization is the part where people in the creative area of the game design the characters involved. They will think up the back-story for the characters and will give thought into why the character will be the way they are.

Quite a few games across the genres are becoming more and more interactive in terms of their storylines. Again the one of the best example of this would be the story in Skyrim. Games like Skyrim allow you to visually design you own character, and make him/her look how you want them to. Other games take this even further, especially Project Zomboid. In Project Zomboid you get to not only customize your characters face but you can also choose their traits and their profession/job. Games with a interactive story are definitely more immersive to the player as they don’t have to play as a predefined character, they get to play as a character that they have created.
Certain games include what we know as cinematics, mainly seen in third and first person games they are a means of continuing the game story and progressing further through. Cinematics are also used as segments throughout games where the next part is loaded and ready to play. Some cinematics are interactive and they allow the player to do something whilst they are played.

Moving on now to my upcoming video game, “Aphelion - Survival”
My game is set in the year 3040 when the human race has fled its native planet, Earth after being under attack by aliens. The game takes on a first person style with gameplay being quite heavily influenced by that of EA’s Mirrors Edge. Aphelion will be quite fast paced, requiring the player to sometimes think fast in order to get out of situations. Combat wise the game focuses on close quarter combat with very minimal use of guns. Players will be able to perform combos and other attack variations in order to fight enemies. Much like in Mirrors Edge, fighting too many enemies at once won’t be good. You will however be able to fight at least 4 enemies at a time performing spectacular acrobatic fighting moves.
Certain areas of the game will involve players completing button combinations to get past objects and these tie in with some of our in game cinematics My games singleplayer will see you play as legendary parkour master Nikita Shimsusa. We kept the singleplayer story to one character as we found this to be better. In Aphelion the narrative structure stays the same throughout. The reason for this is because my games’ story narrative is linear. In the games single player, it features only one playable character and that is the protagonist and main character Nikita. The game does have various NPC characters included such as other characters like Leo or Kira. NPC’s consist of enemies too, in single player story you won’t be able to play as the enemies.
The antagonists in Aphelion is/are the alien invaders (hydronians)
The game focuses on disasters as these are the reasons for the game. The game is based on an epic disaster where the human race is under threat from aliens. Without these disasters, the game wouldn’t have a purpose and the characters wouldn’t be who they are.
My game harbors lots of tense moments such as adrenaline fueled chases in which the player frantically has to escape.
Engine wise, we hope to be using the all new spectacular Unreal engine 4 to offer superb photorealistic graphics to your gaming experience. The reason for this is because the game Aphelion has intense visuals from start to finish.
My game is primarily set in space where some parts of the game will be played, you will play some other missions in other locations, but let’s not give away any spoilers…
Aphelion will also have an online section where players will be able to compete in vs matches, time trails. I feel that, my game having multiplayer support will greatly boost it in terms of reputation. Having looked at Mirrors Edge I can see how unique it was compared to every other game and how it stood out from the rest, but I feel that if my game has multiplayer support then it will be something greater than what it would be if it were to only have singleplayer.
Having given some more thought into the multiplayer aspects of my game, I feel I would like to include an online race type game-mode where players can race each other. Multiplayer on Aphelion utilizes the ability the create a custom character we you can hone and show in online game modes. There are games similar to mine; these are Mirrors Edge, Halo, and Tomb Raider. I have looked at these games and have seen elements that I could really use to enhance my game.
While Aphelion is available on all next gen consoles, it will be best known for PC gaming, as this is where it will really shine. On PC, Aphelion will have active mod support, which will be approved by the games’ developers.
GAME IDEA: After fleeing earth on generation ships the last of a human civilization is under threat from invaders. Aliens begin attacking the generation ships leaving little behind, relentless in their onslaught to eradicate all human life; however the humans have one more trick up their sleeve… the free runners. Incredibly agile they are able propel themselves off of walls and run across walls. These elite humans trained in the art of parkour and karate are humanities last hope of staying in existence amidst the alien threat.
All of mighty Earths nations bring forth their heroes and heroines to join forces in the great effort to save the human race.
