task 5 - planning for my future
PERSONAL STATEMENT:
I am interested in studying for a degree in Media Production because I find the technical aspects of film and TV really fascinating, particularly special effects. I would also like to work as an actor/voice-actor in both film and television. I feel my naturally creative nature will drive me to success in this course and I think I will be a valuable asset in this area.
I'm currently studying a level 3 BTEC Media extended diploma. The course first came to my notice at the end of Year 11 at a time when I wasn't sure what I wanted to do post-16. After learning about the BTEC course I knew that is was exactly what I wanted to pursue. The technology being used and the work on show during the Post-16 open evening were to me really quite amazing. I thought, "I would love to do this!"
There's never been a time where I haven't enjoyed acting or using my voice in cool or funny ways. Back when I was at my junior school we used to do stage performances every year at the Civic Hall in Bedworth, I enjoyed every year of it. Most people were nervous, but to me it felt natural and I wasn't fazed at all. I didn't get stage fright. I did a performance which as a result of a considerable amount of votes by other students gave me the role of Vice Captain for my school house Tudor.
I still use my voice now, but at church where I often deliver Bible readings. I get many compliments from the congregation including my parents and family. Numerous times I have been told that I have a good voice, some people say I can do good impressions! I love using my voice and I love acting as I feel I can express myself through it.
In BTEC Media, I sacrifice my free time (lunch breaks, morning breaks) in order to get more work done and also so I have more time to make my work of a better standard than it otherwise would be. At home I take my time to research techniques and tips which I can perfect and use within the lessons, this specifically applies for the video editing and filming side of media, rather than the written side. I take my media work with great seriousness and always produce
my work to the best of my ability. I do find the more practical areas to be more of a speciality for me; however I still try very hard in the writing of essays. My creative side really seems to flare and take centre stage in the area where you have to come up with ideas and also with the video editing section. My first eight minute programme (Spirit Squad) which I made for Unit 22 achieved a distinction grade. I thoroughly enjoyed making and editing the film, writing the script and coming up with characters and their back stories. I was engaged and as a result I was satisfied with what I had produced.
My work ethic is good: I study hard then reap the rewards afterwards. I feel this is the best way to go about things. But I do value my free time and spend it doing the things I enjoy. I take part in mixing music at home (I like to DJ) and playing electric guitar in my best friend's band "Overpass".
I hope you will give my application serious consideration. I feel I would thoroughly benefit from the course you offer, and that I would be able to contribute to the course as well, since I am a great team player. I have every intention of making my study with you the bedrock of a creative career in the media.
