task 1
The requirements of working to a brief
This is the first of four components that comprise Unit 5. You will produce a portfolio of research into the importance of negotiating, developing and working to a client brief in the media industries in preparation for your pitch to a local business (which you must source yourself) and your development of a brief in liaison with your client.
You will be assessed on the quality of this portfolio and how effectively it prepares you for the negotiation, development and delivery of a brief.
This component targets GC1 and meets the requirements for LO1
Scenario
Your company is preparing to pitch for a commission with a local business. In order to prepare for this pitch and to be assigned responsibilty for the subsequent brief you must demonstrate your understanding of the process involved in working to a brief.
Task
Produce a portfolio of research which demonstrates your understanding of the process and protocols involved in working to a client brief. Your portfolio should include considerations of:
· The structure of briefs (contractual, negotiated, formal, informal…)
· Interpretation/reading of a range of briefs
· The process/protocol involved in negotiating a brief such as
o Constraints (legal/ethical/regulatory)
o Consultation and amendments
o deadlines
You will be assessed on the quality of this portfolio and how effectively it prepares you for the negotiation, development and delivery of a brief.
This component targets GC1 and meets the requirements for LO1
Scenario
Your company is preparing to pitch for a commission with a local business. In order to prepare for this pitch and to be assigned responsibilty for the subsequent brief you must demonstrate your understanding of the process involved in working to a brief.
Task
Produce a portfolio of research which demonstrates your understanding of the process and protocols involved in working to a client brief. Your portfolio should include considerations of:

Negotiating and Planning a Response to a Brief
This is the second of four components that comprise Unit 5. You will secure a client and negotiate and produce a brief for the production f the media product they commission. You will liaise regularly with your client and submit and discuss potential treatments and ideas.
You will be assessed on the quality the documented phases of the development process and of the quality and clarity of the final brief.
This component targets GC2 and meets the requirements for LO2
Scenario
Having secured your client you will now schedule (and minute) regular meetings to negotiate, refine/amend and finalise a brief that meets the expectations (and approval) of your client and fulfils all attendant legal conditions and constraints.
Task
You will meet regularly with your client to develop, refine and finalise the brief for a media production. You should:
· Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times
· Document all meetings, decisions and amendments
· Ensure that the proposed production meets all legal and regulatory requirements and constraints
· Establish clear points of consultation and draft submissions of documentation appropriate to the production
· Establish clear deadlines (including contingency plans)
· Secure final approval of your client

You will now respond to the brief you finalised in addressing GC2 to produce a media product that meets the requirements of this brief. You will manage the process from preproduction to final approval for release. You will be assessed on the quality of your documented consultations and on the quality of your final product in terms of how it meets the requirements of the brief and the expectations of your client.
This component targets GC3 and meets the requirements of LO3
Scenario
Having negotiated a brief with your client you must now manage the process of response and production. It is your responsibility to ensure that your client is fully consulted and approves each phase of the production and that the final release meets the requirements of the brief and the expectation and approval of your client.
Task
Having finalised the brief you must now manage the response and production that meets it. You must:
· Meet regulary with your client to discuss progress, invite feedback and act upon this feedback.
· Document all the meetings and decisions
· Produce relevant preproduction, production and post production documents and materials
· Produce a rough edit and present this to your client for the final revision or refinement
· Realise the final product and present it to your client
· Obtain final approval for release

You will be assessed on the quality of your evaluation and on the methods you use to evaluate and reflect on process.
This component targets GC4 and meets the requirements for LO4
Scenario
Having completed your production you must feedback to your company on the effectiveness of the process as a whole. This evaluation will highlight strengths and weaknesses and incorporate feedback from clients and participants. The purpose of this evaluation is to reflect on lessons learned in order to improve the performance of your company in terms of working to a brief.
Task
Submit a written evaluation to your company, which reflects on the process of working to a brief that incorporates documentary evidence of each phase in the process and feedback from the client.
