Task 4 - Treatment
Treatment
Finding Ideas: to find ideas I came up with a stimulus, basically a genre of Film or TV show that I could use for my film. Out of all of the Film/TV genres there are, I chose my short film to be of a horror style because I think horror is a good choice. I’ve watched many horror Films so I had knowledge of some good ideas that work well.
Being as we only had limited resources, I had planned it so that the Film would still be feasible using the equipment we had.
Developing Ideas: So I chose horror as my genre for the film I made. The reason I chose horror was because I have good knowledge of the genre, I have watched lots of horror TV programs and lots of horror Films. Then I thought that I need to be more in depth rather than just “horror”, so I thought what type of horror is I going to make? That was an easy question; I had recently watched paranormal shows such as Most Haunted and Ghost Hunters. This gave me the notion to make my horror film into a paranormal investigation, not to mention that I believe in ghosts as well.
That’s how I got the idea to do a paranormal investigation…
Now that I knew what type of horror film I was going to do, I starting to think along the lines of locations and where to actually get the filming process done. As it was a paranormal investigation I knew I needed somewhere that looked and felt creepy. I needed the location to look creepy so it would fit in with the story behind the film and the feeling of creepy as it would help with the atmosphere and also with the acting.
Narrative structure: The narrative structure for my film will definitely be along the lines of a realist and non linear structure. The reason I want the structure to be realist is because my film is about a paranormal investigation so I want the film to be believable to the audience, I want the events to seem real.
I also chose a non-linear structure for my film as I will most likely want to include flashbacks or flash forwards of some kind in the film at any appropriate point.
Characters: For my film there are going to be two main characters. These two main characters are going to be the paranormal investigators in the story. I have chosen one of the main characters to be called Miles and the other Elliott. There are other characters such as the sound technician and the cameramen that are in my film
Scripts: The script for my film will use some swearing and language. Even though we have a script, when it comes to filming we may find that the dialogue spoken by the actors in the filming process may be a little different from what the script is telling them to say. This may be of benefit or maybe not…
Treatments: For the treatments I have written a breakdown of my film, basically a short story if you will explain what the film is about and the story behind it. The treatment shows the main characters and the other characters involved. The treatment will help sell my story to any producers/agents.
Storyboards: I have drawn out a story board/list of shots to show people what is supposed to be happening in each scene/shot. This will give an idea on where the camera should be placed and what it should be capturing in the shot. I have also written on the storyboard list, the sounds and music we are supposed to hear as well as the first few words of any dialogue if there is any in that particular shot.
Resources: For resources we have different types of camera available for use, mainly the use of hand held cameras will be used but we may use other cameras as well. We have access to props and music and top quality editing software on good powered PCs/Macs.
For talent we have some good actors we can rely on to act in the films and we have good crew available if needed.
We have some good properties available that are possible locations that we could film in. The most likely location for filming in will be St Giles church, Main hall in Exhall.
For costumes we have access to a wide range of different outfits and clothing items to suite the films needs, say for instance if we needed dirty looking cloths for like a serial killer character we have access to costumes like that.
For locations we have chosen
St Giles' Main Church Hall
St Giles' Road
Ash Green
COVENTRY This place is suitable for filming as it is spooky looking, easily accessible, plenty of different rooms for my shots to take place in. The main hall itself is the perfect size for filming in; the main hall is big and spacious. We are able to make the main hall look dark from the inside by closing curtains.
For video recording we will be using hand held cameras for a good part of the film. Other cameras are available for use if needed for any requiring shot.
For capturing audio we will be using the cameras built in microphones to pick up voices and other audio that occurs whilst the filming process is in motion, however for other audio like music and sound effects, we have those on computers ready for editing in once the filming process has ended.
For playing back the videos recorded we have two options on how to view those. Number one being the actual camera used for recording itself as it has the option to view all images and recorded videos using the flip out screen. The second option for viewing the videos recorded would be to import those recorded video files on to the Mac/PC that will be used for editing. Option two is best for enhanced listening as you will be able to plug some ear/headphones in and listen clearly. However when on location we will be able to just view the recorded files on the camera so that we know if what has been recorded is up to standards or meets requirements, this is the easier option.
Myself and my friend Toby Read will take up most production roles whereas some roles may only use one of us for instance video editing. Only I will take on the editing process of my film as it is my film and I want the film to be how I pictured it to be.
Prop list: Table and chair
Risk assessments: The place we are filming isn’t very dangerous at all, the only way it will be dangerous is if we make it dangerous, which wont happen. There are minor dangers such as knives in the kitchen drawers but that’s about it really.
The way to stop these accidents from happening would be to not use the knives unless needed and to use them sensibly are responsibly.
Production process: Rehearsals have and will be done, we have already practiced the opening sequence to my film numerous time and we have other parts will need rehearsals as well. We will do the rehearsals at convenient times to ensure we get the most of the rehearsal sessions and so that we don’t forget our lines or what we should be doing in each shot.
Technical competencies: Toby and I both know how to use a camera as we have both been doing the Btec media level 3 course, which shows us how to use cameras and other film technologies. The course has also shown us how to use editing software on apple Mac computers. As you can see we are pretty well equipped to make small films and productions such as my film spirit squad.
Working title: The working title for my film is going to be “Spirit Squad”
Introduction: My film is a documentary reality Film, which follows Britain’s leading paranormal investigation unit as they do their newest special hour-long investigation of Station Square Penitentiary. The film will seem like
The target Audience: For my paranormal investigation film/TV show there will be a lot of swearing involved, this is quite important when choosing what age category to aim my film at. Having done some research I have found that most horror films nowadays are pretty much around the age ratings of 15-18 as they are quite scary and not appropriate for any people younger than those ages.
The value and ideological stance you will take and how you hope to influence your audience: My views on the paranormal have stood strong all through my life, having been affected by such unexplainable activity from my childhood through to my teenage years, I have been wanted to prove to people that I am not a mad man, that this is all real and I am not making up stories to trick or fool people. Through my film I want to show people the sort events that occurred through my developing life and show them that it is all very real. I want my film to not necessarily disturb the audience, but moreover enlighten them on the subject and show the true horrors that some of the paranormal and the spirits of the spirit realm
The context: to get this through to my audience I will use mediums such as Cinema and DVD and TV film. These options will be hopefully successful in getting to my target audience.
Target Audience: The age group for my Film/ TV Film is to be from the age of 18 – 28 so basically a 10 year span.
Gender: The gender target for my film is mainly mixed, however I may find that it might swing more to boys.
Interests: the interests of my audience are most certainly going to be along the lines of my show, meaning they are going to be interested in the paranormal and things of that sort. People that watch my Film are probably going to be superstitious people who are open minded to such things.
People who are not used to watching films of this genre may be interested in my film as the footage is real.
Prior Knowledge: People will most probably have watched many other paranormal shows and films along with other horror films and TV shows. I think that people who watch shows like most haunted will be interested in my film.
Values: I reckon that if people like shows like most haunted and films such as paranormal activity then they would like my film a lot. My film links to other types of horror and also documentary style films.
Institutions: The institutions for my film would be that of cinema, DVD, Certain TV channels that broadcast horror, and online DVD stores and rental services such as things like Netflix or Love-film.

Length: The length of my film is around the 9-minute mark
Format: My film will be in the format of 1280x760 1080i 25FPS Full HD PAL
Style/Pace: The style of my film will be very creepy and very spooky making audiences sit on the edge of their seats. As for the pace of the film, it will be very slowly built up with short burst of fast high intensity scenes
Cast: The cast for my film is as follows: Michael Barton as Miles
Toby Read as Elliot

Diary/daily record process of my film
On the 9th of December 2013, I began devising ideas for a film. I started looking up possible ideas for a film that I could use and make my own. I looked for ideas most of the day and my results were great.
Then on the 10th of December 2013 after I had chosen the genre, which turned out to be paranormal horror. I began writing the base synopsis for the film. This helped creatively as it gave me more ideas for what I wanted in the film. The synopsis gave me the base idea for what my film was about and who it followed.
Next on the 17th December I began writing the script. Following the main characters I had chosen, who were part of the team spirit squad.
On the 18th December I finished writing the script and ended up with six pages. I had created a mental image of the desired location that wanted for filming. I wanted it to be a mental asylum as the place the spirit squad were exploring in my film was called station square mental asylum. I had also began writing/ drawing out a shot list showing what I wanted the camera to see in the different shots, they were also used for saying what sounds or sound effects I wanted in the scenes too.
After that from December 20th through to January 10th I began constantly looking for locations, which I could start filming my film in.
There were many candidates that were appropriate at first but after a more detailed look I found that they couldn’t be used. An example of one of the failed locations that were hot on the choice list was; Bedworth Methodist church. Bedworth Methodist church was a favourite of choice until I found out that filming in there would be impossible, one because it was constantly in use service after service and two because it was a public building and filming in a public building is prohibited.
On the 10th of January after the constant searching of locations I managed to find somewhere that, in fact, was pretty much perfect for what I needed. It looked spooky and had the look of an asylum, It was big enough to film in and had appropriate décor for my film. The location wasn’t public; it was private and was subject to hourly hire, which my friend and I took up on.
The location that I had finally chosen was
St Giles' Main Church Hall
St Giles' Road
Ash Green
COVENTRY
On 18th January my friend agreed to star in my film and help in the production process and so my film started to come to life.
20th January we began practicing our lines, ready for the upcoming filming.
21st January we had booked the main hall for Friday 24th January 2014 from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, but we actually got here earlier around 1:30pm and we were granted permission to film earlier than we actually booked for.
On the 22nd January around 11:15am Toby and I went to a place in school where we practiced my intro sequence for my film. We used a tripod, which was heightened to get a good view.
This was purely for experimental reasons, deciding whether we would actually use the shot in the film.
On the 22nd January at 3:25pm we rented out some hand held cameras. Toby took a camera and a tripod and I just took a camera. At home we both separately began practicing the different shot types. Despite the film being in the prospective of POV we did intend to use other types of shots for different parts of the film.
Finally it was the big day for filming. It was the 24th of January. We arrived at the place, unloaded the equipment and the filming process had began. We were there for at least 4 – 4½ hours.
All filming had been completed in the space of the 4½ hours we had there and proved to be successful.
27th January 2014 we brought all the equipment back to school, unloaded the cameras and plugged them into the computers ready for upload and edit. From then on the filming process is in still in progress.
